Swarovski Story

A diamond for everyone!

Founded way back in1895 Swarovski have always been way ahead of their field.  Daniel Swarovski, a Bohemian jeweller in the former Austrian Empire, wanted to use crystals to create a 'diamond for everyone’, so he set about creating an electric cutting machine.
He achieved this and then applied the processes he had developed to the wider industrial community. This led to the foundation of Tyrolit, which is now one of the world’s leading suppliers of precision cutting and grinding engineering technology.
Daniel’s son, Wilhelm, was an avid astronomer. He used the techniques used for making Swarovski crystal to make himself a pair of binoculars. His refining of the design led to the foundation of Swarovski Optic in 1949. To this day the company makes precision optical instruments including rifle scopes, telescopes and binoculars.
From adorning Marilyn Monroe’s dress in the iconic cabaret scene for ‘Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend’, to embellishing the necklines of Dior’s plunging cocktail dresses, Swarovski crystals became the quintessential finishing touch. In 1962 Monroe sang ‘Happy birthday, Mr President’ in a dress shimmering with 2,500 Swarovski crystals. The gown sold at auction in 2016 for 4.8 million dollars.
At their headquarters in Wattens, Austria, the company continues to refine and create new cuts, shades and designs.
Pave, bevel, beading and prong settings are some of the techniques used to enhance that beautiful sparkle.
From the chemical composition of the glass, to the precision of their cutting and grinding, Swarovski are unique in the world of crystal. This continuous evolution of material and technology makes Swarovski the world leader in creating beautiful crystal cut creations.
Here at Wild Things, you can find Swarovski crystals in our stunning handmade jewellery and rainbow makers, including crystal fantasies, guardian angel and birthstone ranges. Each piece is expertly crafted to create that perfect gift or keepsake.
